Awakening – Lyrical Love

Tonight I have the privilege of joining other interns from the Substance Excelerate Internship program, and attending the Hillsong Live concert here in Minneapolis.

There is no arguing that Hillsong is the matriarch of worship music today.  For the past two decades they have put out more quality worship music than any other worship artist.  Between their ‘Hillsong Live’ and ‘United Live’ bands, in addition to the many other facets of their music department, they have put out over 100 albums and sold over 11 million copies worldwide, easily making them one of the best-selling Christian artists ever.

But to me, what makes Hillsong so unique is their passion for authenticity in their lyrics.  Yes, some of their songs sound repetitive and hardly creative.  But, each album has at least 2-3 gems of songs that really carry their own, and make their way into the services of many churches across the world.

Awakening, first released on United Live’s Aftermath album, is a track featured on Hillsong Live’s most recent album, God Is Able.  I remember the first time I that I had the opportunity to lead this song in a service; it was one of the most impactful worship services I’ve been a part of so far.  Let’s take a look at the lyrics and go from there:

In our hearts Lord, In this nation
Holy Spirit, We Desire

For You and You alone
Awake my soul
Awake my soul and sing
For the world You love
Your will be done
Let Your will be done in me

In Your presence, In Your power
For this moment, For this hour

Like the rising sun that shines
From the darkness comes a light
I hear Your voice say
This is my awakening

Like the rising sun that shines
From the darkness comes a light
Only You can raise a life
Awake my soul, Awake my soul to sing

This is powerful.  This idea of being awakened to God’s Spirit – to be awakened for Him.  What does it mean to be awakened?

to awaken: to cease sleeping, to become aroused or active again, to become conscious or aware of something.

BAM! I love the word aroused.  Usually when that word is used it’s within the context of sexual intimacy. But, I think that is fitting.  God is a romantic God, there is no doubt about it.  The Bible is full of God’s romance.  In fact, there is an entire book written about the love between a man and woman… to teach us about God’s love for us, His bride.

This song is all about our desire, our passion, to be awakened – aroused – to the love of God.  His love is so powerful, so amazing, so majestic… we really have no clue how vast are the depth of His love.  But, for Him to hear His children cry out, in unison, ‘AWAKE MY SOUL!’ – now that has to be a sweet-smelling aroma!

How can we, as a church, become more awakened to His love for us?
